Templates 1.1. Install a (different) Template If you don't like the standard template of Joomla you can easily install a different template. Recently I changed the template from this website from CelebPlaza to Blogplazza. The template of my other website Blackorwhite.nl is called SlidertabPlazza· All templates I use are from TemplatePLazza On the internet you can find a lot of free and paid templates for your Joomla site.··· ·To show you an example on how to install a template I will install a template on my site. To follow my example go to your Joomla admin panel at http://www.yoursite.com/administrator/ - Click on Install. - After that click Templates - click on Site - Select the downloaded ·template. Click on upload file and install. Click on site and after that on Site Templates. Look if the template you have just installed is in the list Tip: If you are on the Site Templates screen you can also click on NEW· to install a new template. If the installation is done correct you will see the name of your template in between all the templates installed. In the list you will see that another template is selected as the default template. You now need to change the template to the template you have just installed. 1.2. Change the Template Lets assume that at this moment you have the template ·rhuk_solarflare_ii ·as default. You see that on the green selection beside the template. Select your template and ·click on ·Default. Look at your website at your website url· (http://www.yoursite.com) and you will see that the lay-out of your site has changed drasticly. After trying this lay-out you can choose another installed template and you will see a different lay-out each time. You can imagine how easy it can be to change the lay-out of your Joomla site. It’s good to try out several lay-outs to see which one fits the best with your content and taste. Of course you also have to check if the lay-out also looks good with your content, if· your text and pictures still fit in with the new lay-out. You might have to change the content of your website in order to fit in with your new lay-out. I usually try several lay-outs untill I find a new website template that I like in lay-out and that also fits in with my content. You should check frontpage , blog pages and all other pages on your site in order to know if this is the right template for you. 2.· Change the Logo On your site you will for example see a standard Joomla logo if you have just installled Joomla. Click with your right mouse button on this logo on your site, click on background save as now you will see the name of the logo, for example header_short.jpg. Save the file in a directory specially made for working on your website and change the logo so that it fits in with your taste and with the name and style of your website Start the FTP program. Go to your Joomla directory or the root directory depending on where you have installed your Joomla website in and click on templates. After that click on the name of the default template, for example BlogPlazza. After that click on images, and look how your ftp program looks like at this moment. On the right side you will look for the place where your logo is located and when you click on the arrow to the right direction you upload your logo to your website. If you have changed the logo of your website you can also change other pictures on your template, because you now know how to do it and where to find your images. 3.· Advertisements You don't want to keep the standard Joomla advertisements on your website. In your Admin Panel you click on Components and after that on Banners. Click on Manage Banners. Click on published so that you see a red cross. ·After that the banner are unpublished. If you do want to show banners from a third party to make money with your website you can make or add a different banner which replaces the· standard Joomla banner. It’s possible to add a Google adsense banner in the banner component. But there are several modules like the Google Adsense clicksafe module that you can download and install for your site. 4.· Modules Click on Modules - Site Modules. Click on Publish so that the banners that are published are unpublished, you see that because a red cross will be visible when unpublishing a banner. If you have unpublished the banners you won't see any banners / advertisements in your website. Without the banners the website looks visually more actractive. ·But on the other hand you might want the banners to be active in order to make money with your website. 5. Site Menu In the adminpanel you click on Menu and after that you click on Other Menu. After that you could click publish so that certain items on your menu are no longer published. Look which result this gives in your website. 6.· Change the background Now you are this far you might want to change the background of your website. Some templates even come with several variations that you can use for your website if you install the template. To give you a impression on how and where to change your template manually: Open your FTP program, in the directory where your Joomla site is located· click on templates. Click on the name of your default template and click on templates/ name of the template/ images. ·In this directory you upload a picture with the name bgr.png. In the admin panel of Joomla you click on Site and after that on Site Templates. If you are in the screen with the list of all template installed on your site. Click on edit CSS (on the template in which you want to change the background of). When you have the CSS opened scroll down till you see a text like this (Note: Make sure you have a backup of the CSS file, you could copy and paste an original file to notepad and save it as original.txt. In case something doesn't go as planned you can open this file and copy and paste everything back in to place again. You might also ·still have have a backup of the files that belong to the template. You could also upload the original css file that came with the template in case something goes wrong. You could also copy and paste the text in another file in notepad and look and search for body there. For a website with a background change the text to body { background: url('/joomla/../images/bgr.png') repeat; margin: 15px; height: 100%; padding: 0px; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, Sans Serif; line-height: 120%; font-size: 11px; color: #333333; This is an example, just look at the original Joomla Css and the changed text to find out what text i have changed. You might have a different css because you try it on another template.
